Major Confusion! - Protein vs. Moisture - How to properly DC?
Ok, here is the scoop. The majority of my hair is still relaxed. I am attempting to figure out this balance b/n moisture vs. protein with a DC. I still see several pieces of hair breaking off whenever I use even a wide tooth comb. My hair does not feel dry at all as i have using the moisture products below.
I have been roller setting my hair and using a moisture conditioner as a leave in before I roll my hair up. When I take it out, I then use a bit more leave in and then a very light castor oil/jojoba oil mix.
I first threw out most of my drugstore products that were not good for hair and went straight to Trader Joes and Whole Foods b/c I know their products don't have the cones and fillers or sulfates. This is what I have. PLEASE tell me if these products are categorized properly also.
Protein Based: Shampoo- Aubrey GPB Shampoo (WFoods)
Conditioner - Jason Natural Biotin Conditioner (WFoods)
Moisture Based: Shampoo - Kiss My Face Miss Treated (WFoods)
Conditioner - Tea Tree Conditioner (TJoes)
Leave In: Protein - Cantu Shea Butter Leave In
Moisture - I was leaving the Tea Tree one in
To seal in the moisture: Castor Oil from whole foods mixed w/ Jojoba Oil
Possible Deep Conditioner - I have Apogee 5 minute Reconstructor (do I use this all the time?)
I have yet to use the Protein based ones b/c based on the so call strand test I needed more moisture. I am totally confused about this so called strand test and how to do it properly. Here are my questions.

- Do you take more than one piece of hair for the strand test? I have never seen it actually done so I am just going by what postings have said to do.
- How do you deep condition and do you use ANY type of conditioner? Is it just the process of using heat that makes it a deep conditioning process?
- How do I properly seal in the moisture and do you do that same when your hair needs protein (seal in w/ an oil)?

LOL. I actually started that thread but still not sure about how to properly do the strand test and what exactly is considered "Deep Conditioning" vs. regular conditioning etc.

Deep conditioning is usually done for 30 minutes or longer vs regular conditioning for about 3-5 minutes then rinse out. This is my opinion. I could be wrong.

Re: Major Confusion! - Protein vs. Moisture - How to properly DC?
I'm not an expert by any stretch...only my view that is open to more knowledge
- Do you take more than one piece of hair for the strand test? I have never seen it actually done so I am just going by what postings have said to do...I would do a 3-4 strands because I've found that my hair isn't consistent just as our texture isn't consistent throughout
- How do you deep condition and do you use ANY type of conditioner? Is it just the process of using heat that makes it a deep conditioning process?...like Lynn said you DC longer AND it does matter what you use. I prefer more natural ingredients such has honey, oil, coconut milk, yogurt, etc. And there are conditioners that will say to leave on for 15-30 minutes. I read those are considered deep conditioners vs. those who say to work in and rinse out after a minute or two.
- How do I properly seal in the moisture and do you do that same when your hair needs protein (seal in w/ an oil)?...you seal in the moisture with an oil or a heavy cream like shea butter. My practice has been to use either water from a spritz or a true moisturizer and then apply an oil over it paying close attention to my ends. When it comes to protein I've never heard of sealing in protein. I've always been told that if you do a protein treatment to follow with a moisturizer. I'm assuming you can seal with an oil. Also, I do most of my sealing at night before going to bed. I'm not a fan of feeling oil in my hair throughout the day, but that's just me.
