Mango Butter

Hey ladies! This is my first post, so bear with me

I have natural for about a year and a half, but I still call myself a newbie since I'm just now learning how to take care of my hair.

Back in March, I was searching for a product that I could use in my morning and nighttime routine. I had heard so much about shea butter and coconut oil, so I figured why not? Well, I already had some coconut oil that I had used, but I wasn't crazy about the way my hair felt afterward. Finally, I learned about butters-n-bars ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ) and ordered shea butter and mango butter.

I got them in the mail and couldn't wait to try them. Naturally, I tried the shea butter first, since I knew more about it. I did not like the way my hair felt or SMELLED. No product could overshadow the smell....so.....

I tried the mango butter...and fell in love!!! For those of you wondering about its consistency, it's a hard white butter, but when you rub it in your hands, it has a very creamy (and if your hands are really warm, oily) consistency. It absorbs on my hair instantly. It has a very, very, very faint smell that won't compete with your other products. I know this is a long post, but I just wanted to put this info out there...please post any questions!!

I was really curious about the mango butter. I haven't heard about many curlies using it. Thanks for this post, I may order it soon.

Yeah...I was a little skeptical at first because, like you said, no one mentions using it for their hair. Even on websites like fromnaturewithlove.com, they suggest using it if you're making some kind of cosmetic product. But, if you do try it, let me know how you like it!

I will definitely let you know if I decide to purchase it and how it turns out!

I actually bought this when I first started transitioning as part of my product junky-ism. I just recently used it and can say I love it. I like shea butter also but its sort of weird for my hair and makes it feel greasy and stringy like. The mango butter I liked better than the shea. Shea is still in my rotation but I am substituting for mango butter right now. I usually test a product out for a month or so to see the real effects.

@laleepop14...That's great. My hair is really fine and shea butter really weighs it down so mango sounds like a really good alternative.

I tried the mango butter in a mixture and it did not turn out well. It was gritty. It was kind of gritty when I received it in the mail. It did not have a rancid smell or anything. I got it from Butters-n-Bars. When used alone, the tiniest bit let white residue in my hair that would not disappear unless I washed it. I was great for the feet and hands in the winter though!

I ordered some Jane Carter Nourish and Shine and when I got it, it had melted. Well when it solidified, it was gritty. To this day, it is still gritty when I put it my hand and melt it down. I just went and looked at the ingredients and it does contain mango butter. Connection maybe?

@laleepop14 and @jerseygurlwithdacurls... Did you all notice a "gritty-ness" with mango butter as well?

Glad to see that I was not the only one to experience some grittiness with the mango butter.

I didn't notice a gritty-ness with mine. I actually noticed more gritty-ness with the shea butter. Mine is hard, but rich and creamy when I rub it in my hands. However, I've had shea butter that wasn't gritty. Hmmm....a luck of the draw maybe?

I don't think shea and mango butter mix that well. I tried it with shea, mango, jojoba oil, coconut oil and sweet almond oil. It was awful and it did nothing for my hair [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] . One thing I'd advise is not to put it on your hair when it's soaking wet because it doesn't absorb as well.

Every morning, I spray Juices-n-Berries before I get in the shower. After the shower, I coat my hands with mango butter (letting it get really creamy) and run my hands through my hair. The little bit of moisture from the shower helps the butter absorb. My hair is soft all day and all night [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I've been using Jane Carter's Nourish and Shine for two years now. I store mine in a cool place (basement) along with my coconut oil. I only use it to seal my ends and I've never had any problems with grittiness....but my whole stash has never been melted. I have also mixed a tiny bit with coconut oil with good results (I warm a small container full in hot water).

I LOVE mango butter. I use it in a whipped mango butter that I make with coconut oil and some EOs. My hair loves this stuff better than shea butter and the smell is more pleasant imo. I live where it is hot so mine also melts in the mailbox, so it is gritty, not quite as bad as shea but it smooths out just fine in your hands.

My Burnt Sugar Pomade has mango seed oil in it and it's melted and now it's gritty. I think when it melts down if it's not whipped or stirred as it's cooling that may be why it gets gritty? Either way warm it up in your hands really well and the grits should go.

I love Mango Butter as well. I bought mine from Butters and bars (the three combo - shea, mango and coco) I still havent figured out what i am going to do with the coco butter yet.

Out of the 3 i am in love with mango butter. Has anyone tried Avocado butter??
