Glycerin Question
So I was in CVS and I saw a bottle that said "pure glycerin" I remembered reading/hearing alot about people using glycerin in their homemade hair sprays, so I grabbed some. My question is, is CVS glycerin the same glycerin as the glycerin I've been reading/hearing about? Or should I take it back before I open it? Does anyone here use that glycerin?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Glycerin Question
It's not the same as the glycerin I use. I use vegetable glycerin.

Re: Glycerin Question
Safer to get it from a nutritional or health food store; something that actually says vegetable glycerin. I've never heard of it and upon Googling it, I found this on page 1: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg/npgd0302.html Scary stuff!
Re: Glycerin Question
the anhydrous (this means no moisture) portion of the ingredient label is telling you that there is no moisture (water) mixed with the glycerin.
glycerin does come from vegetable sources, the soap-making process and bio diesel production; the vegetable source is the one that you want on your hair and skin because its safer (because it comes from vegetables). because glycerin comes from the last two sources, you cannot be sure how many impurities (safe and otherwise) are still in the glycerin. and as such, it looks to me that the product label does not tell you the source of the glycerin. so, i concur with luv2pamper.

Re: Glycerin Question
@ ladybee: Yes, it's totally ok. I have a concoction in a spray bottle using veggie glycerin, conditioner, my favorite oils, and my essential oil (lemongrass). My hair loves it, and it's been my savior through the dry winter weather.
Re: Glycerin Question

Re: Glycerin Question
i use Africare glycerin and it's the cheapest i have seen. i get it at my local bs store and it comes in an 8.5oz. bottle. It's kosher so it's pure vegetable glycerin. my hair loves glycerin and i usually mix it w/ my favorite oils like ladybee84.
Re: Glycerin Question
For all the ladies that use a spray bottle mix. . . what is your recipe? Do you have a certain ratio or do you wing it?

Re: Glycerin Question
Usually with vegetable glycerin, I go about 30% of the veggie glycerin and the rest water with an essential oil.
Re: Glycerin Question
I got mine from Vitamin Shoppe, but try http://www.vitacost.com/. They're one of the cheapest sites I've come across, and I'm actually due to order more. Its the Home Health brand.

Re: Glycerin Question
I actually went to my Vitamin Shoppe today but they didn't have any in stock so I ordered it there along with Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner, which they were ALSO out of! hahaha. Good thing I wasn't itching to use them tonight. sheesh.
Re: Glycerin Question
If you want a good recipe try out toni daley. She just did the on the couch interview today. I got my recipe from her youtube channel and it works great.

Re: Glycerin Question
ok ladies. I would normally use Vegetable glycerin but I have run out and I am currently trying to use all of the products I have before I restock anything. So I remembered I bought some Pure Glycerin by Black Queen when I first began my natural hair journey and I never used it. Well, the ingredients are Glycerin USP.
*It says its idea for Protection against harsh cold weather and conditions.
*Smoothness
*Softness
*Conditioning and moisturizing
*Helps repair dry or damaged hair and skin.
*Conditioning, Moisturizing Humectant
Well, it sounds good to me but I have always heard Vegetable Glycerin is better.
So my question is would you use it, and the price compared to VG was great only $3.39 for 8oz. at the local beauty supply.

Re: Glycerin Question
I was told that any glycerin you see in drugstores, pharmacy, health food stores, and beauty supply stores will all be vegtable glycerin whether it says "vegtable" or not. Animal glycerin containing petrolatum is used only for the production of automobile lubricants/oils, not human use.

Re: Glycerin Question
I purchased NOW brand glycerin from a health food store. The label says that it is "food grade".
